The ATP Citi Open Preview 2013
The Citi Open in Washington DC this week is one of the eleven ATP World Tour 500 events, so there is a big field of forty-eight players battling it out. It looks as if it is going to be a pretty competitive and evenly matched draw as well. This is part of the Emirates Airline US Open Series and there is one star attraction at the head of the field.
That is Argentinean big-server Juan Martin del Potro, who should take a lot of heavy backing this week. Delpo, the world number seven, has a great record at Washington, winning it twice before. He took the title the last time he was here in 2009, doubling up on his success from 2008. So while he hasn’t been back here for a few years, he is running as a pretty strong favourite. The last time that Del Potro was out in action this season, was in the semi finals of Wimbledon. There he duked it out with Novak Djokovic in a five set epic, before just running out of steam in the deciding set.
Given his power behind his first serve, and the class that he has, he really should storm the field here. Nothing too much to stand in his way in the draw at all and would be surprised to see him miss out on a berth in the final. The fourth quarter looks to be a right battle, with second seed Kei Nishikori, reigning champion Alexandr Dolgopolov and John Isner all in there. Frankly the form and backing should go to John Isner, who recently won in Atlanta, which came directly after a semi final run in Rhode Island.
The dark horse in the field this week in D.C. should be Canada’s Milos Raonic. In a relatively easy quarter as fourth seed, he will be looking to bounce back after disappointing clay and grass swings on the season. He has a massive serve that he can back on and should be a menacing quarter finalist if he can find some form through the early stages.
