German Tennis Championships Preview 2013

Is it time to get a handle on Roger Federer this week? After his failing at Wimbledon, the great Fed Express steps back into action at the German Tennis Championships. The Swiss superstar does go off as favourite this week for the tournament and this is the first time in five years he has been at this event. He is a previous winner of the event, winning four times in fact, the last title coming back in 2007. He holds a pretty impressive 29-4 match record at the event heading into this week’s action.

Little surprise then that he will have his backers this week. It will be worth looking at the seeded options in the opposite half of the draw to him though, where the likes of Tommy Haas, Andreas Seppi and Nicolas Almagro are floating around. This is probably where the best value of the week is at. Which shot to go with outside of Roger Federer this week? It will be third seed, Spaniard Nicolas Almagro. This is a clay court tournament in Hamburg and Almagro is good on clay. He lost in the semi finals here last year, and lost in the final the year before that. This will be the eighth crack at the event for the Spaniard so he is at home here.

It is clay where he shines the most, and he went to the last sixteen at Roland Garros and a quarter final in Bastad last week on the dirt. He has also been to two clay finals this term (losing both). A longer value shot will be Jerzy Janwicz. The exciting young Pole had that great run to the semi’s at Wimbledon (beating Almagro along the way). Not really developed his game on clay, but up there in Federer’s half of the draw if the Swiss star slips up. Better outside shot value is Juan Monaco though, who has a 14-6 record in Hamburg, and returns this year as the defending champion.
