ATP Cincinnati Western and Southern Open Preview 2013

This could be a historical week for world number one Novak Djokovic because if he claims the Cincinnati title on the weekend, he would become the first player to win all nine of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles. So a lot at stake for the Serbian here, but he couldn’t deal with the power of Rafael Nadal in Canada last week. So it is straight from one ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event and into another as the action gears up towards the 2013 US Open.

Will Djokovic deliver this week? He was hammered by Nadal in the semi’s of Montreal last week, but he gets a clearer run to the title this week and could only get revenge over the Spaniard in the final. The top seed he could face in the semi’s this week is David Ferrer, so you would, on the hard surface, bank on the Serb making it to Sunday. It is more likely to be Juan Martin del Potro he’d face in the semi’s though than Ferrer. There could be a tricky opponent in Milos Raonic along the way to the semi’s for Djokovic, with the Canadian losing to Nadal in the final of Montreal over the weekend.

With the draw set up the way it is, Djokovic should have favouritism without question. Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray are all in the opposite half of the draw. Andy Murray looked a bit unfocused last week, losing in the third round of the Canada ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event, he has won this twice before though, most recently in 2011. He’ll have bigger things on his mind, like defending his US Open title, so unsure over him. However, given that he’s rested more than Nadal last week and the fact that neither Nadal nor Djokovic has won this before, he may be a decent shot. He needs a bounce-back performance for sure.

Roger Federer has generally looked a shadow of his former self, so it’s quickly on to Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard impressed again last week in taking the Montreal title. Like Djokovic, he has never won Cincinnati, and indeed hasn’t been past the semi’s here. Nothing to trouble Nadal until a potential quarter final meeting with Federer, and then potentially a semi against Murray. In a Murray v Nadal showdown, would edge Murray this week as Nadal had a long week in Canada.

Stat: Nadal is the most successful player in ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events, winning 25
