Brussels Open 2013 Preview

The field in Belgium for the Brussels Open is usually one which gets well populated with top stars, being that it is one of the final warm ups ahead of the French Open. However, there is only one top ten player in the field for this season’s edition, and that being former world number one Caroline Wozniacki, she doesn’t even make terrific value. The world beating days of the Dane seem to have long passed her by. Her best run this season was to the final of Indian Wells where she lost to Maria Sharapova (helped en-route in walkover against an injured Victoria Azarenka). A disappointing first round exit in Madrid and another first round exit in Rome just about sums up her season and less than stellar form. Really not enough value to warrant backing her, even though she won here back in 2011.

Which means that there is great value in the rest of the field. Dominika Cibulkova is one of those player who can turn up and delight. Ran into Serena Williams early in Rome which put a stop to her tournament there. She has been to the final of one event this year, losing that, and isn’t natural on clay, but she is a powerhouse and should at least reach the quarter finals. There should be good dark horse value in her. Germany’s Julia Goerges is just about in the same boat, a past winner on clay, but just waiting for her to find a consistent top gear. Still, one of the most powerful hitters in the field here and she has the advantage of the easier top half of the draw whereas Cibulkova doesn’t. Could be big value in her.

Italy’s Roberta Vinci is generally very strong on clay, but hasn’t been carrying the form to back with a lot of confidence either. So the total outside shot value in here could be in young Estonian Kaia Kanepi. She went to the semi finals here last season, losing to eventual winner Agnieszka Radwanska. In the competitive bottom half but is good on clay. Went to the quarters in Madrid (stopped by Maria Sharapova) and the semi’s of Portugal. One of her three WTA titles was on clay last year.
