Estoril open – Portugal open Preview 2013

The Portugal Open lost the two time reigning champion for this year’s edition, as Argentine Juan Martin del Potro, the former US Open champion, pulled out with a stomach illness. That is quite a big loss as he was the star attraction in the field and going for a hat trick of titles in Estoril (which is now known as Oeiras). So there goes the number one seed, and it means that David Ferrer will be stepping up into the role as favourite after receiving a wildcard entry. This is a good chance for the Spaniard to regain some form after a shock exit in the second round of Barcelona against qualifier Dmitry Tursunov. Ferrer is one of the best clay court players on the ATP Tour and will naturally go as strong favourite.

He is the only top ten player in the field and you would expect him to be fired up to get over that hard-to-swallow defeat in Barcelona. There isn’t anyone in his half of the draw to worry about, with world number 18th Andreas Seppi being the highest ranked player that he could go up against. Ferrer, the world number four should be so dominant in that top half that you are only going to be looking for value in the bottom half.

Stanislas Wawrinka at 7/2 makes some good value behind Ferrer, and the world number 17 is in some pretty good form. The Swiss player hit the semi finals at Estoril last season, losing to Del Potro. He hit the semi finals in Casablanca this year and hammered world number two Andy Murray in the third round of Monte Carlo recently. He is looking like a man full of confidence at the moment and worth backing as an outside shot if Ferrer slips again. Not the strongest field ahead of him either really and a Ferrer v Wawrinka final doesn’t look to be too far out of the picture. But on clay, Ferrer is usually too strong for most.
