Rome Masters 2013 Preview

The stars of the ATP are out in force again this week, with little respite after the clay action in Madrid. It is on to Rome this week for the ATP and Spaniard Rafael Nadal will be leading the field after claiming yet another title on the weekend. Nadal powered his way past Stanislas Wawrinka in the final of Madrid, taking his fifth title of the year since his comeback. He is red hot favourite to go all the way again in Rome, in what is a very busy and testing time for the entire field. Nadal’s progress to the title in Madrid was helped by the fact that Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Roger Federer all posed little threat in the event. While those remain Nadal’s main challengers from the outset in Rome, it is only Djokovic who really looks capable of getting close.
Even the in-form world number four David Ferrer fell at the hands of Nadal last week. The threats from Federer seem to be rapidly declining, while Andy Murray doesn’t have the clay consistency to offer much value. Novak Djokovic has even been suffering some uncharacteristic slip ups, crashing in the second round of the Madrid Open to world number 28 Grigor Dimitrov for example. The thing about that, is that means Djokovic will be a lot fresher than Nadal this week, so may offer some value at 15/8 second favourite behind Nadal’s 4/5 favouritism. Djokovic lost in last season’s Rome final to Nadal. They are the definite front runners in the field, but Nadal’s clay elitism would edge things.

Nadal and Djokovic would clash in the semi final from the top half of the draw. The bottom half of the draw is wide open and Juan Martin Del Potro with his 17-6 record for the season should be fresh after not playing in Madrid. His power off the serve could take him deep this week.
