Open de Nice Côte d’Azur ATP 2013 Preview

The Open de Nice Côte d’Azur is one of the final two pre-cursors on clay before the French Open. The ATP Tour only went back to Nice in 2010, so this is only the fourth edition of the event in its current guise. It is now one of five ATP World Tour events to be held in France and it was home talent Richard Gasquet who took the inaugural title in 2010. This year, it is Gilles Simon and Benoit Paire who will be leading the French brigade at the event in this one. Simon may make a bit of value in the field, as he reached the semi finals last year, losing to eventual winner Nicolas Almagro. As for Paire, he been in decent form this season, but hasn’t been past the first round in Nice.

Leading the field though for this year’s event was supposed to be world number six Tomas Berdych, the only top ten player in the field. The draw had been friendly to the number one seed here and the Czech shouldn’t have really run into any kind of opposition until the semi finals. After making a run to the semi finals of Rome in his last outing, losing there to Rafael Nadal, but beating world number one Novak Djokovic in the quarters, he was favourite, but pulled out of the Nice event over the weekend.

Defending champion Nicolas Almagro isn’t back to try and win his third Nice title in a row so there will be new name on the trophy this year. The depth in the field isn’t too extensive, so Gilles Simon has to take precedence. With Berdych’s withdrawal, the top half of the draw is wide open. When Sam Querrey is the favourite in a half of a draw, it shows a bit of a lack of competitiveness. Highest ranked player in the top half and no excuse not to get to the final.
