Rome Masters WTA 2013 Preview

The action in Rome this week on the WTA is pretty much a carbon copy of last week’s action in Madrid. Serena Williams powered her way to the title in Spain on the weekend, snapping Maria Sharapova’s 21 match winning streak on clay by beating the Russian in the final. They are the big guns and the front runners in the field again this week in Rome on the clay. There is the distinct possibility of there being a Williams v Sharapova final again this week. Serena Williams probably has a bit of an easier draw as well than she did last week, the top seed she could go up against in her half of the draw is Agnieszka Radwanska, who isn’t looking at her best at the moment. So anything less than a final four appearance for Williams would be a shock.

Over in the other half of the draw, Maria Sharapova, who has won the Rome title for the last two years, should dominate. But the draw just throws up some considerations. What makes Sharapova’s quarter interesting is that she would meet Sara Errani in the last eight. Sharapova is superb on clay, but has such trouble in playing Serena Williams, she has to go as second favourite. The fact that she would meet clay court specialist Errani, who lost in the Madrid semi’s to Serena Williams, makes Sharapova’s path much tougher. Victoria Azarenka, who looks like she needs more match sharpness on clay after a shock defeat against Ekaterina Makarova last week is a potential semi final opponent for Sharapova too.

The draw is heavily in favour of Serena Williams, Sara Errani always offers outside value on clay.
