Topshelf Open Preview 2013

Clearly not going to see a whole host of stars giving themselves a work out just a week or so before Wimbledon. The grass court season is short and sweet, and along with the AEGON International in England this week, there is the ATP s-Herogenbosch in the Netherlands to enjoy some betting on. This is the Topshelf Open and it is still a critical grass court stop for players to try and get their footing on the surface before Wimbledon. It is just one of five ATP World Tour events played on grass.

But it does suffer in running the week prior to Wimbledon, but there are two top ten players out in action in the Netherlands. Topping the bill this week in Spain’s David Ferrer, who couldn’t stand up to the power of Rafael Nadal in the final of the French Open recently. The Spaniard doesn’t have a terrible record on grass, having won two titles before on the surface, and one of them was here last year (his second s-Hertogenbosch title. Ferrer is reliable on grass, and hits the Netherlands with a 12-1 record at the event, and is strong outright favourite given his ranking status and current form, yet is still some value.

Behind him the biggest challenge should come from Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka. He has been in great form all year, getting his hands on one title. Has never proven himself to be great on grass though, with a losing record on the surface heading to this event. Not the most reliable on grass, it has to be said. Should be up there in the betting though, because of his form, and it will all depend on how quickly he settles in on grass. The best outside bet should be France’s Benoit Paire who was a semi finalist here last year.

Stat: Two time winner David Ferrer has a 12-1 match record at s-Hertogenbosch
