The post-Wimbledon dust will settle down this week as the ATP Tour continues on to the SkiStar Swedish Open in Bastad. This is a hugely popular tournament with the players and after the short grass swing of the season, it is back to clay. This is an ATP World Tour 250 event so not a high focus for the top players. However, there are some strong front runners at the head of the field.

Tomas Berdych heads the field as favourite for this week. He was in pretty good form at Wimbledon, stopped by Novak Djokovic in the quarter finals. He has been close to the Bastad title, finishing as runner up twice. Surprisingly for a hard working player like the Czech, he hasn’t been able to get a title under his belt this season. A pretty good chance here, but his lack of conversions may offer value elsewhere.

When clay comes around it is easy to look at Argentina’s Juan Monaco. He is familiar with the tournament and like Berdych has been a losing finalist here. Big clay court player and has won seven career titles on the surface. The draw is working somewhat in favour of the Argentine here so should have a good run after going out of Wimbledon early. Pretty much in the same boat is Nicolas Almagro. The Spaniard has had some good runs this year (a notable appearance in the final on clay at Barcelona).

Almargo is a previous winner of the tournament as well, triumphing in 2010 and that should put him in good stand. The Spaniard has been to three Bastad finals in his last seven appearances.  A Monaco v Almagro semi final shot in the bottom half of the draw isn’t that unrealistic. For the outside shot this week, it will be Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov who went to the semi’s here last year. In the top half of the draw alongside Berdych, and has been deep in competitions this season.

Stat: Almagro is the only previous tournament winner in the field
