WTA Bad Gastein Preview 2013

There are two WTA Tour events this week and we will take a scan of both. Topping the bill is Serena Williams’ appearance in Bastad, Sweden. She will be stepping out in action for the first time after her shock defeat at Wimbledon against Sabine Lisicki. You wouldn’t expect there to be many firsts for Williams to achieve in the game still, but this is an international tier tournament, and she has never won at this level. Granted, this being the lowest tier of competition, she has only played five of them during her career, never having made the finals of any of them in fact. This is a clay tournament and she is powering away as an odds on favourite and not at any value at all.

So simply because of the fact that she’s in the international tier field, she should really blow everyone else away in Bastad. The best other option in the field is Simona Halep who is in blistering form, winning three finals in her last four outings. Have to look at the dominance of Williams though. Going off to Bad Gastein, Austria where we’ll look for value. Not a wealth of talent but a couple of big names to look at. Favourite this week is young German Mona Barthel. She is one three Germans in the top four seeds alongside Annika Beck and Andrea Petkovic. Barthel is a tremendous young talent, but would look at Petkovic who is just coming into top form.

Andrea Petkovic went to the final of the ITF in Marseille where she won, and then went to the final in her very next outing as well in Germany. Both were on clay and while she bombed at Wimbledon, can’t argue with her clay form. She makes the senisble option. As an outside shot would look for Belgium’s Chanelle Scheepers who played well last week in Hungary to reach the semi’s on clay.
