WTA Italiacom Preview 2013

After the brief foray onto grass, the WTA switches back to the clay this week. The post-Wimbledon action heads to Palermo, Italy this week for the Italiacom Open. This is just an international level tournament so not a wealth of major stars turning up. However, two of the best clay court players around are in attendance and it is an Italian double heading up the field on their home soil this week.

Sara Errani at tournament levels like this is pretty much a banker. Hard to look past the Italian really and she is dominating the field for this one. The world number five rocks into action as top seed and six of her seven WTA titles in her career have been on the clay. Another thing to her advantage is that she has been resting up for the last couple of weeks after suffering a shock exit in the first round of the Wimbledon Championship. Should really be fired up enough and comfortable on the surface to deliver on her favoritism.

Her compatriot and doubles partner Roberta Vinci is out as well for this one. She was surprisingly halted in the second round last year by Britain’s Laura Robson. However, Vinci, the world number 11 is usually a force when it comes to clay. Hasn’t quite been at her best this season, but is worth tracking. With Errani (two time winner of the event) in the top half, would pick an outside shot from the bottom. Here two names stand out, Kristina Mladenovic and Irina-Camelia Begu.

The latter may be worth a shot. Went to the semi’s last season here, a year after hitting g the quarters in the previous year in her first attempt. Could be trending with that tournament history.
