WTA Rogers Cup Preview 2013
The Rogers Cup is a great warm up event for the US Open which starts later in the month. The big guns are out in force for the Premier Tier event on the hard courts of Toronto. There’s a world class field in Canada and the world number one tops it all. Serena Williams is back in action. The American has won the tournament twice before and is strong favourite. Her two wins at the event came in Toronto (with the Rogers Cup alternating between Montreal and Toronto). She’s got seven titles this year, including her Grand Slam triumph at the French Open and hard to lay against her really.
After her upset at Wimbledon against Sabine Lisicki, Williams was back in winning mood in Bastad, albeit at a low ranking event with little opposition for a player of her class. Overwhelming favourite here and no reason not to suggest she’ll power her way to the title. Potential quarter finalist is Wimbledon winner Marion Bartoli and the top seed she would meet in the semi’s is Agnieszka Radwanska. Would back the power of Williams against either of them 9 times out of 10.
The presence of Williams in the first half of the draw, should almost wipe everyone else in that half out, realistically. If Williams does slip, who is likely to be the biggest benefactor? Would look for the scrappy Sara Errani to bustle and hustle her way to the final.
So the bigger value could be in the second half of the draw and the appearance of Angelique Kerber catches the eye, topping the third quarter. Still waiting for her to burst into life this season, but has been sounding more confidence, and like the draw ahead of her. Should cruise through to the quarter finals, where she could meet China’s Li Na. Would suggest that that would really be a showdown to win the half of the draw, because with the unpredictability of Petra Kvitova, Caroline Wozniacki and Sam Stosur (although the Australian beat Victoria Azarenka in the final of Carlsbad last week).
