WTA Bank of the West Classic 2013 Preview

The Stanford Bank of the West Classic is the highlight of tennis betting this week, and after a couple of years of dominance from Serena Williams, someone else’s name will be on the trophy this year. Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska goes as the number one seed this week, for what is the first event on the 2-13 Emirates Airline US Open Series. The best we have seen this season of Radwanska was a run to the semi finals of Wimbledon, where she was ousted in dramatic fashion by Sabine Lisicki. She has been close to titles this year, and realistically just finding her feet again after a disappointing clay court swing of the season. She will be stronger stepping back onto the hard surface. Given the strength of the draw behind her, she is worth backing as well. Despite a lack of titles this year (just the one) she is fifth in match wins on the WTA Tour this year.

Not a whole bunch of depth to look through this week, with the unpredictable Sam Stosur going as second favourite in the draw. She goes in the bottom half of the draw away from Radwanska and has a tricky quarter as well to get through, so for sure no guarantees there. As an outlook look this week, young American Madison Keys will naturally have a lot of home support on her side and pushed Radwanska to three sets at Wimbledon in the third round before running out of steam.

With Radwanska looking relatively comfortable for a place in the final from the top half of the draw, there is such a cluster of options in the other half to meet her in the showcase, it’s hard to know where to turn to. Young Sorana Cirstea is in solid enough form and hasn’t been out since an early exit from Wimbledon. Should enjoy being back here too after making it to the semi’s last year, losing to Serena Williams. Never really found her feet on grass this season, but is better on the hard court.

But a stronger option should be Dominika Cibulkova. The diminutive Slovakian powerhouse hasn’t played since Wimbledon and was a quarter finalist at Stanford last term, losing to Cirstea. It has been a pretty quiet year from her, not a lot of games under her belt, struggling with an injury in April. When she strings things together, the two time WTA titlist has the power to blitz her way deep into the competition.

Stat: Dominika Cibulkova was the US Open Series third place finisher last season, hot on the hard surface.
